7 Kitchen Remodel Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Kitchen Remodel Tips

Considering a kitchen remodel in 2020? A newly remodeled kitchen can have a big impact on your enjoyment of your home while making it more attractive to buyers if you decide to sell. However, it's easy to make mistakes that cost you time and money.

Our REALTORS® have looked at many kitchens over the years, and they point out 7 common kitchen remodel mistakes – as well as how to avoid them.

  1. Failing to Research

Simply hiring a general contractor without doing your research may leave you unprotected if problems arise. For example, if your contractor doesn't have a state license, you won't receive all the possible protection from the state license board.

Avoiding this mistake: When you're choosing a general contractor, make sure they have a state license as well as insurance. Also, check their references.

  2. Neglecting Contract Specifics

If you have a written agreement with your contractor – and you should! – know that what's in this document is what counts. A contract that isn't specific enough can quickly lead to trouble.

Avoiding this mistake: Make sure the contract includes every possible detail, from the exact materials that will be used to the start and finish date of your kitchen remodel.

  3. Changing Your Plans

Work that's requested after your remodel begins can cause delays and add thousands of dollars to the cost of your project. These "change orders" disrupt plans and may leave your contractor waiting on supplies before work can be resumed or completed.

Avoiding this mistake: Think through all your choices before work begins, and make sure you and your significant other agree on everything.

  4. Impulse Decisions

Looking at design elements such as flooring or countertop materials in a showroom may not give you an accurate picture of what they'll look like in your home. They may look different in your space, and under the type of lighting, you'll be using.

Avoiding this mistake: Ask for samples to bring home so you can look at them in your kitchen and under the type of lighting you'll have after your remodel.

  5. Forgetting Storage Space

Having plenty of functional storage is an important part of any kitchen remodel. Failing to plan for enough can make you quickly dislike your new kitchen.

Avoiding this mistake: Plan for storage that accommodates items near where they're used, and don't forget items like additional drawer dividers and pantry pullouts.

  6. Not Enough Light

Having a shortage of lighting fixtures or lacking the correct types can leave your kitchen looking dreary or sterile.

Avoiding this mistake: Make lighting a priority in your design and consider having three types – overhead, spot, and accent.

  7. Limited Electrical Outlets

Particularly if your home is older, your kitchen may not currently include enough electrical outlets. After all, a decade or two ago, people weren't necessarily looking at their kitchen outlets to handle lots of appliances in addition to an iPhone, tablet, and other gadgets.

Avoiding this mistake: Plan for plenty of strategically placed electrical outlets, so they're easily available throughout your kitchen.

Contact us if you'd like to find out what's most popular in kitchens. We can suggest updates that buyers are looking for in Raleigh homes for sale, and that are most likely to let you recoup your investment.
